We deliver a programme of preventative educational and advice work with 11 to 16 year olds in Schools across East London. The Education Worker runs activities that involve discussion groups and workshops using a variety of methods such as drama, role-play, which address the following: Domestic Violence, Gender based violence, Bullying, DV and Cultural Issues, Relationships, Eating Disorders, Teenage Pregnancy, Forced Marriages, Sexual Health, Drugs/Alcohol, Race, Sexuality. We work closely with school staff and those with child protection responsibilities. We support young people affected by domestic violence on an outreach basis. We ensure that the voice of the young person is heard and through our support we build their confidence and self-esteem. Because many young people have a mistrust of authorities those that access our service value the independent and confidential nature of our work. During 2008, 26 young people were supported on a one-to-one basis. The issues that were dealt with included physical, emotional and sexual abuse, homelessness and forced marriage. Clients were supported both emotionally and practically, information and advice was provided so that they were aware of their options and were able to make more informed choices. My experience with Ashiana I joined Ashiana in year 9, looking back to when I started I know that I have changed a lot. I feel it – where as I used to be aggressive and angry I now have a positive approach to life and am generally happier. I attended a number of Ashiana sessions in which I have learnt a lot, we covered a number of different topics over the years. The topic which sticks out in my mind the most is focused around changing your aggressive energy to positive probably because I gained the most out of it, the topic lasted for about three weeks and was about being assertive and getting your point across without seeming aggressive. We also did a lot of work on domestic violence, abuse and our rights as young women.’ |
